Top 5 questions I’m asked about the physical therapy profession

How long do you have to go to school to become a physical therapist?

Currently, physical therapy programs are doctoral programs.  This results in about 7 years of college education.  Programs are also very competitive and only select a limited number of applicants.

What is the most common issue you treat?

I have treated many different conditions from the head to the feet but the most common issue I’ve treated is spine conditions such as low back and neck pain.  With my specialization in women’s health I also treat conditions related to this such as pelvic pain, incontinence, and pelvic organ prolapse.

Don’t your hands get tired?

As a manual physical therapist, I do a lot of hands on treatment such as soft tissue massage, myofascial release, and joint mobilization.  My hands have gotten strong as a result of my work and don’t typically bother me.

Do you have to do continuing education?

Yes, in the state of IL we are required to have 40 hours of continuing education every two years.  Many of my continuing education has been in my specialty of women’s health.  I have a certification in pelvic physical therapy (CAPP-Pelvic) through the American Physical Therapy Association.

How is physical therapy different from chiropractic care?

I can’t speak for the chiropractic profession but many people seek out chiropractors for spine issues.  Physical therapists also treat spinal conditions.  We utilize many different manual techniques to reduce muscle tightness, improve spinal alignment, and increase strength.  We help restore movement and optimal function.  Patient education is incorporated to help people maintain what they have gained in physical therapy.
